I put my hand on your back the other day,
And felt life in you.
I love that you’re alive.
I felt the persistent hammer and bump
Of your system
Working while we sat next to each other,
Keeping you alive, keeping you warm.
I sent a silent thank you to your heart –
You didn’t even know –
To you, I touched your back,
When really, I reached inside,
Through your skin and ribs,
And found, next to your lungs,
That tireless muscle,
And gave it my loving touch
And attention.
Such a blessing –
The galaxy of your body
Keeps you here,
Keeps you living,
Keeps you with me.
I imagine our hearts whispering to each other
While we’re sleeping;
Us not knowing
While they sync their beat;
Us thinking that we love each other with our minds
And the surface level of our bodies,
While our love flows in ways we never see –
Our multiple selves meet, on multiple planes:
The aware, the unaware, the mechanical, the spiritual…
This is just conjecture,
Where my thoughts wander
When I rest my hand on your back,
Or my head on your chest,
And feel your heart beat.
If you love my poem, please share it with a friend.
