This is the way to do the DMV –
Arrive on a Wednesday afternoon, with an appointment.
Check ahead on the documents you’ll need.
Plan to be there for hours.
Bring several books, your journal, and a pen.
Think of Africa, and all the waiting you did there,
And all of the observing of waiting, practically perfected as an art.
Pretend to be African: let go of a need to be special.
Let go of your craving for VIP treatment.
Recognize that you are just like everyone else.
Drop your expectations to the ground like a robe, metaphorically (literally, keep your clothes on).
Watch the people.
Meditate.
Spend some time thinking.
Notice how relaxed you feel while waiting.
Be amazed by how quickly time passes and how easy it is to feel satisfied.
Come back as many times as you need, and repeat these steps.
